Sometimes being a digital activist seems like howling at the moon - it feels good while you do it but you wonder what you’re actually achieving. Well, here’s your answer; you’re creating genuine real-world change.
In March 2024, digital rebels supported the Insure Our Future week, to highlight how insurers finance and enable fossil fuel industry projects, and put pressure on the sector to demand they stop causing climate chaos through doing so.
It had real impact, with actions in 30 countries over 5 continents supported directly from home by you in Digital Rebellion. We made several main player insurance companies re-evaluate their roles as enablers of some of the worst climate change contributors world-wide.
And that’s a sea change in responses to our actions; this time it wasn’t just us putting a spotlight on those responsible to create public pressure for them to act, but we made these organisations themselves look at what they are doing, their policy and the long-term impact of their activities.
Zurich Insurance is the eighth largest insurer in the world. They requested negotiations with insurance activists even before the action started. The result of those negotiations was that Zurich has introduced full fossil fuel exclusion policies, ruling out insuring all new and expanding metallurgical coal, oil and gas projects.
Probitas, another insurance company, announced it has ruled out insuring the West Cumbrian Coalmine Project as well as proposed mine in Australia and the controversial East African Crude Oil Pipeline which means that 29 insurance companies have now ruled out supporting EACOP and 7 ruled out WCCP.
Look out for more actions this year to keep up our pressure on the insurance industry.
Here is a spirit lifting article from Greenpeace, with Ten Notable wins in the climate and environmental justice space to inspire us in our fight for a better, greener, and fairer world for all.
When you take action, any action, in support of Extinction Rebellion or any of the groups with the same aims, you’re having an effect in the real world. Yes the resistance to change is huge, but we’re not just howling at the moon!
