Action: Insure Our Survival July Wave - Do It from Home

Insure Our Survival: One Year On

This July, the Insure Our Survival campaign is one year old, and we are turning up the pressure on the fossil fuel insurers who are enabling climate breakdown. It’s time to push harder in order to cancel carbon bomb projects such as EACOP, stop ecocide, and confront climate injustice.

From our homes and on the streets, in towns and cities across the UK, we'll reinforce our message that the public demands the insurance industry stops insuring new fossil fuels. As part of a sustained and escalating campaign, these anniversary actions will put more pressure on the industry to Insure Our Survival and remind them of the service they are providing to fossil fuel companies that will wreck the lives of their children and grandchildren.

This action works! Read about the results of the March 2024 campaign in our blog, and read about world-wide results on the Insure Our Future news page.

This page gives tips on how you can take action from your sofa, on the bus, or wherever you are, to add your voice and amplify the message Insure Our Survival now!

Act now

Why insurance?

No insurance = no drilling and digging for oil, gas and coal.

Insurance is the Achilles’ Heel of Fossil Extraction. Without insurance they won’t drill, mine, transport or refine because they don’t want to expose themselves to the risk of a project failing.

Just 20 companies insure 70% of fossil fuel projects, and a large number of these companies are based in the UK.

The insurance industry is rapidly becoming our best unintentional messenger to the world that climate change is real, because they are having to deal with what is actually happening as climate-related risks increase. For all the denial from the fossil fuel industry, insurers are having to pay out more and more in claims from extreme weather, increasing premiums, tightening underwriting standards and withdrawing from whole sectors altogether, leaving homes and businesses exposed to complete ruin.

Insurance companies know that climate change is increasing their risk of going bankrupt. Many are ready to move out of fossil fuels, they just need a good push to help them crack under pressure when faced with public scrutiny, and reputational damage.

Insurance action works!
We showed in early 2024 that direct action by XR against Insurers can not only get them out of specific Fossil Fuel expansion projects, such as Cambo, EACOP and Rosebank, but also move them to rule out insuring Fossil Fuel expansion going forwards as Zurich did globally following direct action by XRUK this Spring.

After a one-rebel occupation of their lobby in London, Zurich Global’s CEO actually emailed XR’s actions team. Which was a first!! One month later they announced they are getting out of insuring any new Fossil Fuel projects.

All action contributes to slowing down the fossil fuel companies. Every time another insurance company pulls out of insuring the industry, competition is reduced and prices go up.

Yes the need for resilience and adaptation to worsening extreme heat is urgent. Will Marsh ‘Turn Down the Heat’ by stopping brokerage for fossil fuel climate bomb extraction projects such as EACOP, Banshkhali Coal Power station and the Trans Mountain Tar Sands Pipeline?

It’s going to be critical to anticipate risk in the increasingly complex global geopolitical landscape, where climate chaos and weather systems cause mass migration, food and water shortages, rising sea levels and resource competition. International stability and security will be threatened for all. Will Marsh urgently stop brokerage for the fossil fuel extraction fuelling the climate emergency, and drop all links with the East African Crude Oil Pipeline that is estimated will emit 34million tonnes of carbon emissions each year?

Last week at the Energy Insurance conference you focussed on upstream oil and gas, aswell as energy transition and renewables - no doubt the timeline for transition to renewables was discussed. Antarctica's ice mass is melting on av. approx 136 billion tons per year - the urgency to do something is unparalleled. Will Marsh prevent soaring risk from climate change by immediately stopping brokerage for EACOP, Banshkhali Coal Power station and the Trans Mountain Tar Sands Pipeline?

Great idea to look at examples of successful engagements between lenders and insurers that help to mitigate the impacts of intensifying climate risks. Will Marsh McLennan recognise the impact of brokering and enabling fossil fuel extraction projects on the climate chaos that is fuelling these risks, and urgently transition away from involvement with EACOP and other such projects?

Climate change has a significant and multifaceted impact on mental health, with direct and indirect effects leading to anxiety, depression, and other psychological distress. Taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to the impacts of climate change can have positive mental health outcomes for employees affected by these issues. Could Marsh take action to reduce greenhouse gas output, by dropping brokerage for fossil fuel companies, and lead us forward in the transition to renewables?

9th July - Focus: Royal Albert Hall

Tonight The Royal Albert Hall is hosting The British Insurance Awards. This is to be attended by insurers who are enabling fossil fuel extraction projects and in so doing, are underwriting climate chaos.

There will also be those attending such as Aviva, AXA, and Allianz who are investing in and underwriting the companies arming the genocide in Gaza.

Let's email The Royal Albert Hall to ask why they are hosting this private event; it certainly isn't inline with the sustainability initiatives their website describes, and we, the public want them to stop.

Below is a suggested letter that you can email (from your email account - this gives a more personal touch to the communication).

Please copy and paste - or even better make bespoke and send it to the Box Office and Press Office:

Let's come together to push for change.

Subject: Hosting industry events

Dear Sir/Madam

I understand that once again, the British Insurance Awards are taking place tonight at the Royal Albert Hall [1].

I am surprised that the main auditorium - which I and many others associate with the BBC Proms [2] and other quality live concerts and events - is being used for such a commercial venture.

While this event is supporting a worthwhile charity [3], many of the 2025 finalists - and some of the award sponsors, even in the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) categories - rank poorly for their continued support of fossil fuel projects [4]. This doesn't square with the sustainability initiatives your website describes [5].

Along with fossil fuel enablers, there will be insurance companies attending who are continuing to invest in and underwrite companies arming Israel’s genocide in Gaza. [6]

This is a private event: but I do wonder whether the Royal Albert Hall would host such an event if they were required to publish all such arrangements?

Yours sincerely

Tonight @RoyalAlbertHall is hosting The British Insurance Awards, attended by insurers who are enabling fossil fuel extraction & insuring arms companies. I ask that you urgently cut your ties with this event. #InsureOurSurvival #NoNewFossilFuels #climatecriminals #digitalrebel

8th July - Marsh + StopEacop social media storm

Let's contact Marsh and the other insurers who still haven't ruled out supporting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline. Click below to find sample posts and images, plus learn more about why it’s essential these insurers don’t underwrite EACOP.

3rd July - Focus: AXA

On 3rd July the Energy Insurance London Event took place (one of the oiliest dates on the insurance calendar) and AXA was the headline sponsor. Extinction Rebellion’s Insure Our Survival campaign supporters blockaded the main entrance to the conference in Blackfriars with a five metre banner. The blockaders had one simple demand for the delegates: stop insuring new fossil fuel projects. Let's carry on the momentum - reach out to AXA on LinkedIn and social media: ask them to drop insuring LNG gas projects, and lead the way to a liveable future by disassociating themselves with oily events like this.

👏 👏 Great to see the AXA Foundation for Human Progress launched this week!
Big ideas for a resilient future are what’s needed within this increasingly risky world, marked by the challenges of climate change. Will a supported high-impact project include the development of transformative policies for AXA to rule out insuring LNG, & fossil fuel ‘exception’ projects by companies in transition?

https://xrb.link/x7nT8mL
Inspired to see this platform with real time analytics on environmental and climate risks. Will AXA prevent growing climate risk by ruling out insurance of Liquid Natural Gas projects such as Cameron LNG, Louisiana, USA? Insured tankers are delivering fracked gas to Europe from the terminal, and the infrastructure is destroying the local Cameron community with pollution and causing coastal erosion. #AXA4Climate #AXAUNOC3

https://xrb.link/XS94F6ZI
Amazing work and partnership to turn knowledge into action to protect coastal ecosystems. Can AXA take the next step and drop insurance of LNG gas companies that are contributing to global warming?

https://xrb.link/t3Xro8Gq0
Sounds like a powerful tool to help communities adapt and respond rapidly to widlfires. Can AXA now move away from insuring LNG and fossil fuel projects that are contributing to climate chaos?

https://xrb.link/H2xxu8kA
A really interesting read! The IGCC Report cautions that the 1.5°C objective will be unattainable unless immediate, substantial reductions in emissions are implemented, particularly from fossil fuels and deforestation. Will AXA lead the way and stop insuring Liquid Natural Gas Terminals in the US & fossil fuel ‘exception’ projects, and drop insuring Drax (UK’s largest biomass power station)?

  • @AXAUK: main sponsor of today's Energy Insurance London Event where the focus is on upstream oil & gas. In this #ClimateEmergency, urgent policy change must stop the insurance of fossil fuel extraction that's tipping the world into a lethal uninsurable future.
    #InsureOurSurvivall

  • In May 25 #AXA invested $568,349,733 in fossil fuel companies, with insurance of major LNG terminals in the US, & polluting projects like Drax. It's time for a new insurance industry paradigm, 'resolutely tuned for tomorrow' & 'protecting what matters'.
    @AXAUK #InsureOurSurvival

  • @AXAUK #UnlockTheFuture & end dirty profits from insuring LNG & fossil fuels. The IGCC Report cautions that the 1.5°C objective is unattainable unless immediate, substantial reductions in emissions from fossil fuels are implemented. Climate chaos is ruining our childrens' future.

  • Will #AXA prevent growing climate risk by ruling out insurance of LNG projects such as Cameron LNG, Louisiana, USA? Over 60% of US LNG shipments sail from here, with AXA-insured tankers delivering fracked gas to Europe. @AXAUK #RiskyBusiness #ClimateCriminals #InsureOurSurvival
